Firm Focus

ABOUT SARAH TETLOW

Sarah wants to see a change in the legal industry where attorneys enjoy the career they worked hard to achieve and reduce the burnout. She is passionate about focused work and organization and helping the attorneys she works with achieve a healthy balanced professional and personal life. She understands the pressure that attorneys endure in trying to manage their workload, respond to emails, course correct as unexpected (or many even expected) changes occur in your case. Firm Focus was created to help attorneys boost productivity and reduce stress at work.

Sarah is an experienced productivity consultant, trainer, and speaker for attorneys and other legal professionals.  She uses her past experiences, organizational and strategic thought process, education, and training to help law firms increase their bottom line and operate more efficiently.  More importantly, attorneys see a reduction in stress and anxiety and an increase in focus and new business.  Through one-on-one consulting, strategic planning, workshops, and group trainings, Sarah works with attorneys and law firms to find personalized ways in which to manage one’s day with a proactive and focused approach.

Sarah began her career in law in the early 2000’s after graduating from UC Santa Barbara with a B.A. in Law & Society.   She has worked in law firms of all sizes and has stretched from legal assistant to paralegal to manager of marketing and business development.  Sarah has experienced first-hand the stresses that attorneys endure in trying to manage multiple projects.  They also have the daily necessity to react to more pressing needs in a matter of minutes,

causing frequent mind-shifting and multi-tasking.  Sarah’s mission, and the reason for starting Firm Focus, is the desire to see a change in the industry.  To help attorneys and other legal professionals experience control over their day and mitigate the poor habits caused by the workload.

Through Sarah’s passion for focused work and her unique and sympathetic coaching approach, she creates a partnership with her client that warrants learning and changed behavior.

Sarah enjoys work-life balance engaging in a multitude of activities outside of Firm Focus. Sarah is married to Andy, Director of Operations for a large restaurant group, and they have two sons.  She enjoys outdoor activities with her family, dancing her heart away at U-Jam Fitness®, learning, self-improvement, and watching an occasional “brainless” series on Netflix during her quadrant 4 not important / not urgent time-wasting period.

ABOUT FIRM FOCUS

Firm Focus provides experienced productivity consulting, targeted training, and speaker coaching for attorneys and legal professionals. Their mission is to help law firms and legal departments of all sizes increase their productivity, reach their mission critical objectives, develop a strong workplace culture, and develop a plan for continuous growth and focus. Sarah Tetlow, the founder, merged her years of experience working in a variety of law offices as a Paralegal and Legal Marketing Director to develop a formula for success in reducing our client's bottom line by using strategic organization to operate more efficiently. Her passion is in partnering with clients to offer personalized services targeted at reducing everyday stresses. She enjoys collaborating to make a difference.

Sarah is brilliant, hard-working, smart, funny, and beautiful inside-out. She enjoys work-life balance engaging in a multitude of activities outside of Firm Focus. Sarah is married to the Director of Operations for a large restaurant group, and she raises two sons. What makes Sarah unique is that she does all this while battling Ulcerative Colitis. She spends her life changing the lives of attorneys, all while quietly combating a condition that could very well take hers any day. Sarah is a giver. However she is smart and strategic about her giving. She has learned to successfully navigate so others don’t take advantage of her. She attributes her great work with lawyers to setting boundaries, planning properly, and being prepared, teaching them to do the same. Inadequacy in or absence of boundaries for attorneys is a persistent theme. The concept of boundaries often arises but is something attorneys don’t understand and they take on as much work as given, even if there are nowhere near enough hours in the day to complete those tasks. The fact is, lawyers are simply too afraid to set boundaries related to workload and they suffer profoundly as a result. The helpless feeling that comes with being asked to do more and feeling unable to say no often leads to depression, anxiety, substance abuse and in some cases, suicide. The person not setting a boundary is choosing a course of action and absorbing the consequences. In the same way, people who set a boundary for their own health or sanity also accept, with open eyes, that there may be other consequences associated with that decision. It’s about exercising choice and power in one’s life. Sarah helps lawyers exercise their choice and find their power. One might even make the case that Sarah saves jobs, marriages -- and maybe even lives.

IN MY OPINION

What Sarah does is so vital in our mission to lower the depression and suicide, alcohol and drug addictions in the lawyer population. The legal industry has one of the highest suicide and addiction rates of any industry. Sarah should be proud that she is actually changing behaviors in an industry where their compensation systems and inefficient operations are literally killing the lawyers. Today's legal environment puts pressure on law firms to deliver faster and more efficiently in order to remain competitive. Sarah's workshops are highly interactive and customized to meet the needs and desired outcomes of each individual client. She works closely with stakeholders to create onsite or offsite workshops that will achieve results while creating a dynamic environment that promotes engagement and powerful discussion. She focuses programs on strengthening morale and building an ideal work environment for lawyers while adding fun to the learning process. Her presentations have been called, "edutaining."

Wonder Woman in Business, Allison Nussbaum

Allison Nussbaum

Allison Nussbaum's career is at the intersection of law, technology and client growth. She has spent 25 years in the legal industry holding leadership roles in sales, law firm business development and client success.

With a strong foundation in sales honed at Xerox Corporation, she began her post-law school career at LexisNexis where she spent seven years as a consultant to law firms and eventually as the sales manager for New England region. In 2000, Allison joined Interface Software (InterAction). It was at this point that her interest in the intersection of legal tech and business development took root. It was during this time that she realized that she had spent the majority of her career providing advice to law firms without ever having worked in one, and decided that in order to expand her understanding of the business of law and the challenges faced by attorneys and professional staff, she needed to walk the walk, so in 2004, she made the transition from the corporate world and joined Goodwin Procter as the firm’s first Manager of Business Development. There, her primary objective was to build programs and processes designed to help develop lawyers' strategic planning and selling skills. During her tenure at Goodwin, she worked on teams that successfully implemented a CRM, developed a career portal, and designed and delivered business development training to associates and partners. Her seven years in law firms, which included a stint at Nixon Peabody, were formative and being a buyer forever changed her perspective on selling.

In 2011, she joined the tech start-up Manzama where she first served as East Coast Director of Sales before being tapped to develop and lead its Client Success organization. As Chief Client Officer, she led a team that achieved exceptional rates of client retention and satisfaction while the company grew from 25 clients in 2011 to over 170 in 2018. Her experience working in law firms were foremost in her mind as she and the team developed programs to help clients attain real value from the software. She and the Manzama leadership were committed to building a culture of client-centricity at the company. When she left there in 2018 to head up Customer Success at Kira Systems, she left behind a group of colleagues whose impact on her had been transformational. There, thanks to the support and encouragement of the co-founders, she feels she found her truest voice, and learned how to be her authentic self in both her personal and professional lives.

Allison is committed to helping the next generation of law firm business professionals and service providers, especially women, to grow in their careers and to find their authentic voices. She has been sponsored and mentored by some of the best in the industry, and she feels a strong responsibility to pay that forward. She believes that if we put people first, business success will follow.

When she is not working, Allison is a passionate traveler and takes a trip with her now 25-year old daughter every year. This past year, they visited Bali and the year before, Australia. She is a voracious reader, loves to cook and is a little bit addicted to Orangetheory Fitness workouts.

Allison lives with her husband and two Labrador Retrievers in the beautiful state of New Hampshire.

"I just love bossy women. I could be around them all day. To me, bossy is not a pejorative term at all. It means somebody's passionate and engaged and ambitious and doesn't mind learning."

Wendy Merrill has had a successful business development career spanning over 23 years. Her strategic and methodical approach to cultivating and leveraging relationships has allowed her to construct a rich network of resourceful professionals and help others to do the same.

Never a fan of traditional selling or outdated management techniques, Wendy decided early on to approach her career with an eye on the impact she wanted to have with her clients, colleagues and community. Her positioning as a Center of Impact led to great success with her personal and professional relationships.

Wendy is a vocal advocate for creative problem solving, and has worked with both organizations and early to mid-career professionals to engineer strategic growth through an innovative approach to professional development. She is a passionate advocate for Rising Leaders that define success by the impact they want to have in the workplace, community and beyond, and regularly mentors executives, professionals and entrepreneurs who are dedicated to being impactful leaders.

Prior to forming StrategyHorse, Wendy spent 18 years in the financial services space, 12 of which were in her family’s business. She rose up from a sales position to eventually taking the reins from her father as CEO. Inspired by professional lessons learned as both a survivor of and adviser to a multi-generational workforce, Wendy’s practice incorporates common sense, humor and absolute honesty to prepare Rising Leaders to steward their organizations into the future. She also has a knack for igniting an entrepreneurial spirit in people – she’s helped over 50 clients (and counting) to successfully start their own businesses, professional services practices and non-profit organizations!

About the Book:

Impact is driven by the consistent delivery of value. For those of us who aspire to generate a positive impact in our personal and professional lives, our biggest obstacle is often ourselves.

Most of us have been conditioned to fulfill others’ expectations of us and are woefully disconnected from our own motivations. This disconnect sabotages our dreams, goals and ability to be impactful.

Path to Impact: The Rising Leader’s Guide to Growing Smart delivers a progressive approach to helping Rising Leaders productively invest in themselves and in those around them.

Ellesquire

About Amy

After earning her B.S. from Journalism School at the University Kansas, Amy went to work at Lathrop & Gage (now Lathrop Gage) for Katie Hollar Barnard. While there she managed public relations and advertising tactics in local markets and nationwide; she maintained firm social media accounts and website content; she coordinated production of firm marketing materials; and she handled numerous nominations and submissions for legal awards and rankings.

Amy then moved to Garmin International where she married her work life with her personal love of fitness, leading global public relations campaigns for the company’s fitness (running, cycling, multisport and swim) and wellness (activity trackers) products. She left Garmin and went to work on the brand public relations and social media team at Hallmark.

After about two years at Hallmark, Amy reconnected with Katie, joining her at her agency, Firesign, as vice president. At Firesign, she develops strategic communication plans for legal industry clients and coordinates the agency’s marketing and social media efforts.

Amy also coordinate marketing for their amazing educational program, "Ellesquire," and leads weekly coaching sessions with participants. This is something Amy is particularly proud to work on as it was a true passion project of Katie’s and clients love the program.

Amy feels very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with women, empowering them in their careers. As a working mom of two very active little boys (ages 3.5 and 1.5), she particularly loves this part of her job.

About Ellesquire

Ellesquire is a six-week business development program designed for the realities of being a working woman attorney. It’s designed for women by women, to give them the tools and confidence to build their book of business their own way. Participants receive three action-oriented lessons, delivered via video so participants can watch it on their own time, and a one-on-one coaching session every week.

For whom is Ellesquire designed?

Ellesquire is best suited for women attorneys at the senior associate, of counsel or junior partner level. Our content is most relevant to lawyers who know their specialty, have a solid footing of legal knowledge and have had some direct exposure to clients (their own or other lawyers’).

Who is behind Ellesquire?

Ellesquire was created by the founder of Firesign | Enlightened Legal Marketing, an agency that specializes in helping law firms and legal technology clients attract, win and retain business. It incorporates battle-tested marketing tips gathered from her experience at two AmLaw 200 firms – and as a boots-on-the-ground entrepreneur. Learn more about the Ellesquire team here.

What is the total time investment?

For six weeks, you will receive three business development lessons to watch online on your time. Each lesson is about 10 minutes; most are less. Some of the lessons include homework assignments. These are straightforward and will feed directly into your business development plan.

You also will have a weekly coaching session with a member of the Ellesquire team. Conducted by video, these sessions are typically 15 to 30 minutes and provide you an opportunity to ask questions, get help or brainstorm.

Where do I take classes?

Courses are delivered online; you can watch from your desk or even your phone 24 hours a day. Coaching sessions are conducted by Zoom, so we can catch up anywhere you have a wireless signal.

Can our firm deploy this for a group?

Group packages are available; contact us for more information.

What can I expect when I graduate?

While every lawyer, like every case, is different, you can expect a more professional profile, a comprehensive business development plan and – with hustle and action – measurable progress toward attracting, winning and retaining the business you want.

How do I start?

Book a call with one of our team members today. We will talk through your business development efforts to date and see how Ellesquire might help you. If you enroll, we will find a weekly coaching spot that works for you, and you will receive your first lesson that day.

Over 6 weeks, the curriculum covers the following:

  • Defining a personal brand and niche

  • Presenting that brand through biography, case studies and social media

  • Getting visibility through PR and a saner approach to networking (when all day golf and happy hours don’t work because you’re the pickup parent)

  • How to pitch and close business more effectively

  • How to keep and grow business through smart client retention tactics
