About the Book…

In the spirit of The Orphan Train and Before We Were Yours, a historical debut about a nurse who chooses to save a baby's life, and risks her own in the process, exploring the ties of motherhood and the little-known history of Coney Island and America's first incubators.

A nurse's choice. A daughter's search for answers.

New York City, 1926. Nurse Althea Anderson's heart is near breaking when she witnesses another premature baby die at Bellevue Hospital. So when she reads an article detailing the amazing survival rates of babies treated in incubators in an exhibit at Luna Park, Coney Island, it feels like the miracle she has been searching for. But the doctors at Bellevue dismiss Althea and this unconventional medicine, forcing her to make a choice between a baby's life and the doctors' wishes that will change everything.

Twenty-five years later, Stella Wright is falling apart. Her mother has just passed, she quit a job she loves, and her marriage is struggling. Then she discovers a letter that brings into question everything she knew about her mother and everything she knows about herself.

The Light of Luna Park is a tale of courage and an ode to the sacrificial love of mothers.

Jennifer Hawks

Jennifer Hawk’s journey began on her grandmothers’ knee when she declared at 5 years old that she wanted to “help people.”  When her younger sister was born and suffered with a difficult to diagnose and treat medical condition that left the whole family frustrated, Jennifer, now 10 years older, witnessed the transformation that occurred once natural and integrative methods were employed. Her desire to “help others” was amplified.

In 2013, after 10 years working in the traditional medical system in Oncology, Internal Medicine, and Functional Medicine, Jennifer Nelson-Hawks had an opportunity to pursue her passion for Holistic health and wellness and formed Simply Health Collective.  Since that time she has continued to bring her heart and experience into creating a unique space for her clients to take back their health naturally. Jennifer has tirelessly expanded her knowledge and has recently obtained her Board Certification as a Doctor of Naturopathy.  She has also obtained a Board Certification as Holistic Health Practitioner, Iridologist, Holistic Health Coach, IASIS Practitioner as well as Bio-Resonance Practitioner. Through her growing practice and various modalities, she continues to create exceptional client experiences centered on each client's unique health-based needs no matter where in the world they reside.

When she's not out enjoying all things outdoors, Jennifer shares a home with her husband Chris and their beloved dog Q in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
