Michelle Wimes

Chief Diversity and Professional Development Officer

Michelle P. Wimes serves as the Chief Diversity and Professional Development Officer at Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C., one of the nation’s largest labor and employment law firms.  In her role, Michelle leads the firm’s efforts to attract, develop, retain, promote and advance a diverse group of attorneys across the firm’s national platform of 53 offices in the U.S., Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean.  Additionally, Michelle leads the firm’s attorney training and professional development efforts.  She is based in Ogletree Deakins’ Kansas City office.

Michelle has extensive experience in delivering strategic leadership, client development, and talent management programming.  She is deft at implementing change management strategies necessary for comprehensive and effective diversity and inclusion and professional development initiatives and programming.  Previously, Michelle practiced law for 14 years where she handled all aspects of employment litigation while serving as an equity partner at a Kansas City-based firm.  She focused on matters involving employment discrimination, harassment, and civil rights issues while representing clients before the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the Missouri Commission on Human Rights, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, as well as local, state and federal courts.

Later, Michelle spent four years on the senior management team of a premier Am Law 100 law firm as their Director of Strategic Initiatives, spearheading diversity and inclusion strategies and programming for lawyers across nine offices in the United States and Europe.

Prior to a career in law, Michelle was an elementary and middle school teacher in Kansas City.  She received a B.A. from the University of Missouri and performed graduate work at the University of Seville in Spain and undergraduate work at the University of Xalapa in Veracruz, Mexico.  Due to her studies and her extensive legal work in Latin America, she is fluent in Spanish.  Michelle earned her law degree, with trial advocacy honors, from Tulane Law School.  She is the proud wife of federal district court judge Brian C. Wimes and the mother of three daughters, Sydney, Gabrielle, and Saige.

Joel Stern is the Chief Executive Officer of the National Association of Minority and Women Owned Law Firms, Inc. (NAMWOLF). NAMWOLF, founded in 2001, is a nonprofit trade association comprised of over 195 minority and women owned law firms in 42 states. NAMWOLF’S mission is to provide corporations the premier place to go to locate and hire minority and women owned law firms of the very highest caliber.

Prior to this role, Joel was the Global Deputy General Counsel and COO Legal at Accenture.  Joel managed the Americas Legal team and also had primary responsibilities as the Chief Operations Officer of the 420+ member global legal group managing all operations of the Legal team including finance, IT, human resources, communications, facilities and support services. Additionally, he managed all outside counsel relationships across the globe. 

Throughout Joel’s accomplished career, he personally championed key diversity and inclusion initiatives including leading Accenture Legal Group’s award-winning diversity and inclusion programs. He has been a Board Member of NAMWOLF since 2010 and formerly chaired the NAMWOLF In-House Advisory Council. Joel’s published articles and regular speaking engagements reflect his zeal for expanding opportunities in the law.

Karen Kupetz is the Senior Director of Legal Recruiting for Goulston & Storrs, resident in the New York office. She leads the firm’s legal talent acquisition efforts with a specific focus on lateral partners and the successful integration of their practices into the firm. Karen brings an innovative and strategic approach to talent acquisition and integration that is grounded in best practices across recruiting, business operations, marketing, business development and client service.

Karen brings over 15 years of recruiting experience to her role at Goulston & Storrs, both as a recruiter in search agencies as well as in law firms. As a search firm recruiter, Karen often worked alongside law firm leadership and corporate CEOs to identify top talent that aligned with their business and talent management goals. Karen recently served as the National Director of Recruiting for an Am Law 100 firm where she achieved above-market growth and surpassed diversity and inclusion hiring targets while using the most cutting-edge methods available.

Having begun her career as a bankruptcy lawyer in New York and Los Angeles, Karen has first-hand knowledge of what is important to successful attorney integration and uses that experience to help partners make career transitions smoothly.

She has a well-established reputation as a "thought leader" and "thought teacher" through her work as a university professor and author, and the developer/leader of more than 200 seminars and workshops for legal associations and law firms.
